Breaking into Investment Banking: A Complete Career Roadmap for 2025

Investment banking remains one of the most sought-after careers in finance. With Indian deal volumes crossing $90 billion in 2024 and firms like Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Kotak Mahindra expanding their teams, there has never been a better time to break into IB.

But the path is not straightforward. Here is a practical, no-fluff roadmap to help you land your first IB role.

Investment Banking Career Path — from education to landing the role

What Does an Investment Banker Actually Do?

Before chasing the title, understand the work. Investment bankers advise companies on:

  • Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) — helping companies buy, sell, or merge with other companies
  • IPOs & Capital Raising — taking companies public or raising debt/equity
  • Restructuring — advising distressed companies on turnaround strategies
  • Valuations — building financial models to determine what a business is worth

At the analyst level, you will spend most of your time building models in Excel, creating pitch books in PowerPoint, and conducting due diligence research.

The Education Foundation

Undergraduate Degree

While there is no single "required" degree, these backgrounds give you an edge:

  • B.Com / BBA from a reputed college (SRCC, Christ, Symbiosis)
  • B.Tech + MBA is an increasingly common route
  • CA (Chartered Accountancy) — highly valued for accounting and valuation skills

MBA or CFA?

Cost₹15-25L (top Indian B-schools)~₹2L total for all 3 levels
Duration2 years2-4 years (self-paced)

Our recommendation: If you are already working in finance, CFA gives you credibility at a fraction of the cost. If you need a career switch and network access, an MBA from a top 20 B-school is the safer bet.

Essential Skills to Build

1. Financial Modeling

This is the bread and butter of IB analysts. You need to master:

  • 3-statement models (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow linked together)
  • DCF (Discounted Cash Flow) analysis
  • Comparable company analysis (trading comps)
  • Precedent transaction analysis (deal comps)
  • LBO (Leveraged Buyout) models — for PE-focused roles

2. Excel Proficiency

IB analysts live in Excel. Focus on:

  • Keyboard shortcuts (avoid the mouse entirely)
  • Named ranges and dynamic formulas
  • INDEX-MATCH, SUMIFS, OFFSET
  • Data tables and scenario analysis
  • Circular reference handling for interest calculations

3. Accounting Fundamentals

You cannot value a company if you cannot read its financials. Study:

  • Revenue recognition standards (Ind AS 115)
  • Working capital adjustments
  • Deferred tax assets/liabilities
  • Off-balance-sheet items
  • Goodwill and intangible asset treatment

4. Industry Knowledge

Pick 2-3 sectors and go deep. Read:

  • Annual reports of the top 5 companies in each sector
  • Recent M&A deals and their rationale
  • Equity research reports (available on broker platforms)

The Interview Process

IB interviews in India typically have 3-4 rounds:

Round 1: Technical Screening

Expect questions like:

  • Walk me through a DCF analysis
  • How do the three financial statements link together?
  • What happens to each financial statement if depreciation increases by ₹100?
  • What is enterprise value vs. equity value?

Round 2: Case Study / Modelling Test

You may be given a live modelling test:

  • Build a DCF model for a given company in 60-90 minutes
  • Analyze an M&A deal and present your recommendation
  • Prepare a one-page industry overview

Round 3: Fit & Behavioural

  • Why investment banking?
  • Tell me about a deal you have been following
  • Describe a time you worked under extreme pressure
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Round 4: Senior Leadership

Managing Director or Partner round focused on market views, deal opinions, and cultural fit.

Final Thoughts

Breaking into investment banking is hard, but it is not impossible. The biggest mistake aspirants make is waiting for the "perfect" time. Start building your skills today — the models you build in practice will directly translate to the models you build on the job.

The competition is fierce, but most candidates are poorly prepared. If you show up with a solid model, strong technicals, and genuine curiosity about deals, you will stand out.
